The New Nice Incinerator, Named Arianeo, is a Major Modernization and Expansion Project of the Existing Energy Recovery Unit (ERU). Here are the key details about this project:

Location and History

  • Located in the Ariane district of Nice, at 33 boulevard de l’Ariane
  • The original incineration plant dates back to 1932, with a new facility built in 1979

Modernization Project

  • Total cost of works: €222 million
  • Duration of works: 4 years, with completion expected in the 2nd quarter of 2026
  • Designed by the architectural firm Wilmotte & Associés

New Facilities and Improvements

  • Renovation of the ERU with the construction of a new energy recovery building
  • Creation of a sorting center for recyclable waste
  • New administrative building
  • Expansion of the pit and creation of a workshop for the treatment of infectious medical waste (DASRI)
  • Extension of the urban heat network from 15 km to 24 km

Operation and Management

  • Operated by Arianeo, a subsidiary of Valsud (Veolia Group)
  • Public service concession contract awarded in 2021 for 20 years
  • Estimated turnover of the concessionaire: €880 million over 20 years

Environmental and Social Impact

  • Treatment capacity: approximately 220,000 tons of waste per year (2019 figure)
  • Will provide local and renewable energy to 24,000 households
  • Creation of around thirty jobs
  • Establishment of a High Environmental and Social Committee for participatory governance

This project aims to make Arianeo the most efficient energy recovery unit in France, with a minimal carbon footprint.
